List of Commercial Banks, Development Banks, and Financial Institutions In Nepal

Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 2073 classifies banks and financial institutions into different classes. According to this act, Nepal Rastra Bank shall classify banks or financial institutions as “A”, “B”, “C”, and “D” based on the minimum paid-up capital of a bank or financial institution and working areas. Provided that, the Nepal Infrastructure Development Bank is not classified under any class. The following are the different classes of banks and the list of names of the banks under each class.

Classification of Banks and Financial Institutions

As per Nepal Rastra Bank’s directives, the A, B, C, and D class banks and financial institutes should maintain at least the following minimum paid-up capital.

1. Minimum Capital Required for Commercial Banks and Development Banks in Nepal (Class A and Class B)

The commercial Banks (A-Class) and Development Banks (B-Class) have to maintain the following minimum paid-up capital.

The microfinance companies operating in Nepal should maintain the following minimum paid-up capital on the basis of the level of operation.

Class A or Commercial Banks in Nepal

Commercial banks are the highest-class and general-purpose banking institutions. According to directives issued by Nepal Rastra Bank, a commercial bank must have maintained a minimum of 8 billion paid-up capital. Till the mid of January 2023, there are a total of 20 licensed Class-A commercial banks.

Class B or Development Banks in Nepal:

Development Banks are Class-B licensed institutions by Nepal Rastra Bank. They are special-purpose banks with the specific objective of developing certain sectors of a certain region or national level. There are 17 development banks in operation licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank.

Finance companies are the financial institutions licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank under C-class. They are limited in the types of transactions they can do. The capital requirement is also comparatively lower than A or B-class banks. Currently, 17 finance companies are operating in Nepal.

Nepal Infrastructure Development Bank (NIFRA)

Although the name of NIFRA contains a development word in its name, it is not a development bank.

The Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 2073 mentions that, the Infrastructure Development Bank should not be classified under any classes. Therefore, it is a special category Bank established to prioritize the infrastructure development.
